Does Anyone Even Think About Auto Transmission Parts?

A strange phrase and a strange question maybe but, it is, perhaps, indicative of the way in which we take so much in our modern lives for granted. If we had to stop and think, I guess that most of us would stumble across automatic transmissions for vehicles being the root of the phrase. Thus, the parts in question would be those components that are used to build up said automatic transmission systems.
What Is Automatic Transmission?
In the sense of this piece, it is the opposite of a manual transmission (where we use a shift/stick to change a vehicle’s gears from one to another). For most of us, that is about as far as we think about the subject. As to exactly how either system works – we leave that to engineers and auto mechanics.
Limited Knowledge
We all know that our motor cars have an engine and (usually) four wheels. We put fuel in it and, then, start the engine, take off the parking brake, put it into gear (manual) or select drive (automatic) and away we go to wherever we want to get to. From time to time we will wish to go faster or slowdown – that is where the gear changes come in on a manual (or something makes it happen automatically). Just so long as this always happens, we are contented motorists.
But, What If It Fails To Happen?
This is where our lack of detailed knowledge about what the experts call our vehicle’s powertrain works against us. The powertrain is all the “stuff” that enables the engine to make the wheels go round. This covers a lot of ”stuff” which gives plenty of scope for parts of it to break down or fail. The failure can be mechanical, electrical or even fluid and, before it can be fixed, you have to know what it is that has let you down.
Leave It To A Mechanic
That relieves us from having to think about it but, what if he tells us that we will need to replace some of the auto transmission parts and would we like to upgrade them at the same time? The repair has already become quite a major job, so, why not go for some extra performance at the same time? However, the mechanic will then ask if you want to use genuine OEM parts or should aftermarket replacement auto transmission parts be used? Maybe we should have given a little more thought to what is inside our car before we got to this point?
